Sew Detroit Worker Co-op

Several Michigan-based organizations and businesses are coming together to establish a 100% worker-owned sewing cooperative in the city of Detroit. The cooperative will serve apparel brands (local, regional, and national), event planners, designers, retailers and local communities by completing high-quality sewing contracts in a timely manner. This project is intended to serve as a job creator in a local community, as well as to be a catalyst for a dynamic new entrepreneurial garment industry in Detroit.

We believe that Southwest Detroit is an ideal location for this project: sewing skills abound in the neighborhood, it is centrally located and home to several transportation centers, and residents are entrepreneurial-minded. The partners involved in this project are committed to helping this new co-op by assisting it in finding funding sources, contracts, training and educating the members with the skills and knowledge needed to run a cooperative business, and creating the legal and organizational structure.

Home Care Worker Co-op Looking For Collaborators

Hi C2BE and DCC Friends:

With the support of the Center for Community Based Enterprise, a small group in the Detroit area are working towards starting a home care worker cooperative. They will be launching an employee owned business that will provide services to the elderly and disabled who would like to remain in there homes. This group is looking for people that would like to contribute to this effort. If you have a background in home care, nursing or related medical fields we need your expertise to guide in this venture. If you have a business development background or believe you can contribute to starting this business, your help would also be appreciated.

DCC October Potluck

Please join us for a DCC potluck, where you will meet people from all over Detroit who are creating our community-based economy. We are building a resource sharing co-op for community-based businesses and organizations. Memberships are available, but the potlucks are a place where anyone interested in learning and sharing is welcome.

The potluck will take place on Tuesday, October 9th from 6 pm to 8 pm at the First Unitarian Universalist Church of Detroit; located at 4605 Cass Avenue (the SW corner of Cass Ave & Forest).

Parking will be available in the two church owned lots. One of which is on the church’s doorsteps and the other is across Prentis St. If the church lot is full, take the alley beside the church south (towards Prentis). The parking lot is across Prentis beside the Wayne State student housing.

The Detroit Community Cooperative (DCC) is a local, mutual, trading and business development co-op that provides members with skill and resource sharing, discounts on member products and services and barter. Our mission is to encourage, enable and educate about collaborative action as a way to build a healthy, sustainable and inclusive local economy, and to meet members’ needs by providing quality products and services at reduced prices. From Sept.-June we have monthly potlucks, each hosted by a different member organization. It is a great way to learn about and participate in grassroots cooperative economic development.
