CBE Week: A Great Success! |

June 30 Presentation Bonanza |
The June 30 C2BE speaker series event was a great success. Featured speaker Ted Howard gave an inspiring presentation on the Cleveland Evergreen Cooperative Fund and their new family of cooperative green businesses in Cleveland's University Circle, which C2BE hopes to use as a model for business development in Detroit's cultural center. Ted has been kind enough to share his presentation Powerpoint with us, so we're passing it along to you . As if that wasn't enough activity for one day, C2BE Executive Director Deborah Olson made a presentation to the Skillman Foundation on the 30th, giving them an update on our mission and current activities. We've posted her presentation as well for your edification. Finally, in both of the above presentations, reference is made to the cooperative-based economy of the Mondragon region of Spain. As it happens we were able to meet privately in April with Mikel Lezamiz, Director of Co-operative Dissemination for the Modragon Cooperative Corporation, at the Ohio Employee Ownership Center's conference. He has been kind enough to let us share his presentation about the MCC, so we're making it available as well. |

Photos from the Community Grocery Meeting |
|
We've just gotten some photos from the May 28 session of the C2BE Speaker Series, which was held in support of the ongoing Supermarket Task Force. The photos were taken by Eufayba Touray, the Communications Administrator for MOSES, one of our partners in the session. As you can see, the meeting was held in the former Farmer Jack which is the targeted site for the taskforce's first grocery store.
More photos after the cut. |

Creating Green Jobs In Michigan From Auto Industry Patents |
|
We've been keeping this under wraps for a while, but we've decided it's time to go public. Over the last several months we've been meeting with members of the Michigan and federal governments to emphasize the potential value of the wealth of intellectual property (IP, i.e. patents) held by Chrysler and General Motors. We strongly believe that the impending bankruptcies of both companies are putting at risk a wide variety of patents dealing with Green technologies like hybrid propulsion and clean fuels. These patents present an unparalleled resource for both the building of a new Green American economy and the rapid expansion of Green industry and employment in southeastern Michigan. They may also be a potential income source for the Voluntary Employee Beneficiary Association established by the auto unions in 2007, expanding their capacity to meet the retirement commitments they took over from the auto companies. We've summarized our arguments and our proposal in a brief document entitled Requiring Chrysler and GM to Use or Lose Exclusive Rights to their Green Intellectual Property for Benefit of Community Trust . The title's a mouthful, but if you care about the environment, American industrial competitiveness, auto worker retirement security, or rebuilding Michigan's industrial base, it's worth a read. |

Plenty! We attended the Green Today, Jobs Tomorrow conference in Lansing on May 11, where we met representatives of countless non-profits, government agencies, and Green businesses, including keynote speaker Van Jones. In the meantime, we've also finalized more of the CBE Speaker Series. The next event is Fresh Food Grocery CBE in Inner-City Neighborhoods: What Can We Learn From Philadelphia? on May 28 at 11250 E. Jefferson in Detroit, the site of the former Farmer Jack which is slated to become the home of a new cooperative grocery store; registration is 6-6:30 pm, and the event runs until 8pm. If you're interested in the rest of the series, we've posted the updated schedule. |
